Zero Waste Vision for Ottawa

WWO supports the June 2021 adoption by city council of a Zero Waste vision for the city to be achieved through progressive, collective and innovative action and supported by the following principles:

• Honouring the 5Rs waste management hierarchy
• Changing community values
• Protecting the environment for future generations
• Leading by example
• Adopting circular economy principles
• Embracing innovation
• Keeping waste local
• Utilizing the triple bottom line

“The triple bottom line is a business concept that posits firms should commit to measuring their social and environmental impact rather than just the standard financial “bottom line.” It can be broken down into “three Ps”: profitpeople, and the planet.”

What is Zero Waste?

“The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health. Zero Waste saves resources and habitat, provides jobs and reduces toxic chemicals and pollution including greenhouse gases”
